“.. there is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats'

“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing' he went on dreamily: 'messing -- in -- boats; messing”

― Kenneth Grahame

Heed the call said Ratty and he was right, the lure of time pottering about in the sea in the South –(Harbour) finally made me cave in a buy a kayak, not exactly the Titanic but good enough and unlike the afore mentioned so far managed to stay on the water instead of in it! Many moons ago I could swim well and paddle at a good clip but then life got in the way and it was forgotten until one day the sun was glinting off the sea and it looked positively Mediterranean I wondered why I ever gave up paddling and what on earth was stopping me from doing it again; so teeth gritted off to the shops for a Kayak, one that would accommodate a more portly soul than before!! What a laugh trying out kayaks in the shop, dear God there is no graceful way to get in or out but it just seemed to add to the fun. Kayak purchased and then the fear. .could I actually do it again??(wiser people might do a refresher course but who has the time??) Well stuff that! once home off into the sea, what a lovely feeling, so liberating, and just a sheer joy to be there in the harbour going about with the sun sparkling!! It turns out that Kayaking is a bit like cycling you never forget how. So while some people buy fancy cars and fast boats give me a kayak any day! Since then the weather has been mostly foggy and drizzly but so what?  paddling around South Harbour| in the fog and the drizzle just makes an otherwise dreary day so much better and fog makes the sea calm! The Mornings are a great time to head off, sitting the middle of the harbour with just the sound of the odd bird and the gentle sound of a lazy wave, gliding along very quietly taking time to really look at what around the changing hues of the water floating over  rocks, weed and sand, every time I go out I see something new or the trip feels different depending on the tide and wind on any given day.  Plugging out of the usual din for just  an hour is liberating and rejuvenating. If I never go beyond the confines of the harbour it doesn’t matter the pleasure of stealing an hour and pottering about in a boat is just magical!! Take the Adventure, heed the call, now ere the irrevocable moment passes! 'Tis but a banging of the door behind you, a blithesome step forward, and you are out of the old life and into the new!
