Marriage Stones

Dís gallán ag seasamh in éineacht leis na cianta cairbreacha, séasúir, daoine, laethanta, sealaid ag sleamhnú thart, an saol ag athrú ina dtimpeall ach tá’id fós ann, taobh le taobh le spás bheag eatarthu ach péire iad mar sin féin, préamhaithe san ithir ó aimsir na díle. Tá a ndiongbháilteacht agus a mbuanseasamhacht ina ábhar iontais san am seo ina mholtar dúinn dúinn aon sean rud a chaitheamh uainn. B’fheidir go bhfuil ceacht le foghaim uathu!

Is galláin an phósta iad, deirtear go bhfuil siad iad a seasamh ar an taobh thoir den oileán le breis agus dhá mhíle bliain. In aimsir na réamhstaire meastar gur úsáideadh iad chun cleamhnas a dhaingniú. Seans gur pósadh ár sinsir féin ann! Ach meallann na galláin seo daoine go fóill chun cleamhnas a dhaingniú agus bhí sé de phríbléid againn pairt bheag a ghlacadh I lár mór na lanúine a tháinig chugainn ón na Stáit go speisialta chun an gnó a dhéanmh ann! Sheol Tim ríomh phoist chugainn lán de phleananna anuraidh chun a chailín a mhealladh anseo agus an cheist mhór a chur, bhí orainn gach rud a choiméad faoi cheilt agus ligean orainn ná raibh cliú againn cad a bhí ag titim amach. Bhuel tháinig an lá mór, chuadar sall chuig na galláin agus an lá dar gcionn níor chualamar faic. Ó a thiarcais! Ní fhéadfaimis ceist a chur air ar fhaitíos ná bhfuair sé an freagra a bhí uaidh. Pé ní é, d’fhilleadar abhaile agus níor chualamar faic! Cúpla lá tar éis dóibh imeacht tháinig ríomhphost álainn agus na pictiúirí seo a d’inis a scéal féin, is léir nár chaill na galláin a gcumhacht go fóill agus tá súil againn go mbeidh saol sona, ráthúil ag Tim agus a pháirtí.

We all know that islands have a certain romantic magic attached to them and the many couples who have stayed with us in Cape Clear B&B to celebrate anniversaries, honeymoons, get married and even to ask the big question are testament to that! Last year we recieved a number of lovely emails from TimK- from- the -States, who wanted to pop the question at the ancient marriage stones, arrangements were made and the big day arrived. She was totally unaware of the big day ahead. Tim crossed the Atlantic to ask his girl to marry him at the ancient marraige stones on the eastern end of the island. The two stones have stood there side by side though the ages, firmly planted in the meadow for more than two thousand years. It is believed that the stones were used in ancient marraige ceremonies and still today their power seems to draw people to Cape Clear for the same purpose. In a world where everything that is broken is to be replaced rather than repaired, that pair of old stones still stand together, where they were placed so long ago, a monument to the enduring power of love. Tim very kindly shared his pictures of their wonderful moment with us and allowed us to shaire them with you. We wish the pair of them  every happiness and joy in their life together.
